| Subject: ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 Tokyo Updated Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:58 am | |
| ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 Tokyo New announcement from ISU official website Lausanne, March 14, 2011 Taking into account the continued critical developments in Japan, the ISU’s primary concern for the safety of all participants, spectators and members of concerned entities as well as the travel advisories from many governments to avoid travel to Japan until the situation is settled, the ISU in consultation and agreement with the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) and in line with the advise of the Japanese authorities, has concluded that the staging of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 scheduled to be held on March 21-27, 2011 is not possible and the Championships will not be held during that time. The postponement of the Event or alternatively the final cancellation is under evaluation. The same applies to the ISU World Team Trophy in Figure Skating scheduled to be held in Yokohama on April 14-17, 2011. It is understood that a postponement of the above-mentioned World Championships as well as the holding of the ISU World Team Trophy is subject to the confirmation by the competent Japanese authorities that the situation is back to normal conditions allowing the safe conduct of major ISU sports Events in the Tokyo area. As soon as the situation in this respect has been finalized, the ISU will inform all parties concerned of the decision taken. Ottavio Cinquanta Fredi Schmid President Director General | |

| Subject: ISU calls off figure skating worlds in Tokyo, seeks new dates and host city to step in Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:58 am | |
| ISU calls off figure skating worlds in Tokyo, seeks new dates and host city to step in By GRAHAM DUNBAR AP Sports Writer, Washington Post Monday, March 14, 2011; 7:11 PM LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland - Accepting that Tokyo could not host the World Figure Skating Championships next week, the sport's governing body stepped up efforts Monday to find a new venue and dates for its marquee event. The International Skating Union is expected to announce a backup plan this week after giving up hopes - initially shared with Japanese organizers - to proceed as planned after Tokyo's Yoyogi stadium escaped damage in Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami. Instead, the ISU made the inevitable ruling - backed by federations including the United States, Canada and France - to postpone the March 21-27 worlds, and the World Team Trophy scheduled to be held in Yokohama on April 14-17. ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta said it took account of "critical developments" in Japan, including emergencies at the Fukushima nuclear plant. "The ISU's primary concern (is) for the safety of all participants, spectators and members of concerned entities as well as the travel advisories from many governments to avoid travel to Japan until the situation is settled," Cinquanta said in a statement, one day after expressing skating's sympathy at Japan's "monstrous natural disaster." Though Cinquanta said rescheduling in Tokyo was still an option, officials at ISU headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, spent the day in calls with potential replacements. The ISU declined to name candidates or the guarantees it seeks, but requirements are expected to include commitment from a national broadcaster, experience in hosting and a fan base which could respond strongly to buy tickets at short notice. Cinquanta's native Italy has a possible candidate in 2006 Olympic host Turin, which also hosted the figure skating worlds last year. South Korea staged the junior worlds for the ISU at Gangneung this month, and might appreciate another chance to show its hosting skills since Pyeongchang is bidding for the 2018 Winter Games. It could also guarantee strong fan support, with Olympic champion Kim Yu-na having planned to make her season debut at the worlds. Kim is a huge star in her native country, and South Koreans relish any opportunity to see her compete. The ISU should decide on the event's status "in the next few days," according to U.S. Figure Skating. The American federation has offered "any and all assistance" but has not yet been asked to offer a venue. The uncertainty has left skaters unsure how to prepare for their biggest event of the year, but aware that their problems are nothing compared to Japan's. Skate Canada director Mike Slipchuk said the team, including men's gold medal favorite Patrick Chan and reigning world and Olympic dance champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, was updated in calls Monday. "Our group was receptive to (the ISU decision) and understand what happened," Slipchuk told The Associated Press. "Sport is important in our kids' lives and skating is a big part. But when they see what's happening over the past few days, it puts things in perspective. Competing in Tokyo could "no longer be a sporting celebration," said the French skating body, which has worked with its government to bring European men's champion Florent Amodio home from training on the Japanese island of Kyushu. "The French federation reiterates its full confidence in the ISU and its president to take the right decisions," it said in a statement. Only once since 1947 has a figure skating world championships been canceled, after an American tragedy. In 1961, the entire U.S. team, coaches and family members were on their way to the worlds in Prague when their plane crashed as it was about to land in Brussels. All 72 people on board were killed, including the 34 Americans. The worlds were canceled, and held in Prague the next year. Slipchuk said Japan's tragedy outweighed a single sports event. "We hope there is a possibility for worlds and these skaters can compete," he said. "But if not, there's a world championship next year." | |

| 2011 World Championships New Updated:
[center]Three options for the world championship the first is to cancel them
Source - 'LaGazetta dello Sport.it
Cinquanta, the ISU president, has announced that the figure skating tournament that should have taken place in Tokyo next week, will either be cancelled or postponed to next October: “At the moment respect for the Japanese people prevails”
MILAN, 15 March 2011 – “The respect for the Japanese people ahead of everything.” This will be the main focus of the ISU as it decides what will be of the 2011 figure skating World Championships that were scheduled to take place in Tokyo next week, but that were officially cancelled by the federation on Monday given the situation. What now appears to be certain, and that dismisses the suggestions emerged in the latest hours, is that the competition will not take place in the coming weeks at a different venue – said the Milan-born Ottavio Cinquanta, president of the international federation – it wouldn’t be correct towards a country that has been struck by such a tragedy and towards the Japanese federation, which was awarded the right to stage the competition. Furthermore, as far as the logistics are concerned, it would be very difficult given the time constraints. Staging a World Championship is no easy task.
THREE OPTIONS — There are three possibilities, as Cinquanta explained: “Our council will consider the situation very carefully. Presumably though, we will opt for the complete cancellation, or a postponement to October. In Tokyo, if the authorities give us the go ahead, or in a city in a different country, and in that eventuality there would be the promise to award Japan with an edition in the future. As soon as possible we will make a statement to make our decision official.”
THE FUTURE — At the moment, the 2012 edition of the competition has been awarded to France (Nice) and the 2013 one to Canada (London, Ontario). It should also be kept in consideration that the first stage of the next Senior Grand Prix (Skate Canada) is scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 October; and that the only edition of a World Championship to be cancelled was in 1961, when the plane that carried the American team crashed during its landing in Brussels: 72 people died, of which 34 were part of the US team.

| ISU gives JSF deadline on new plan for worlds
- Source, The Japan Times Sunday, March 20, 2011 ROME (AP) The International Skating Union will consider moving the world figure skating championships if Japanese organizers are unable to commit to hosting the event at a later date by Monday. The championships were scheduled to begin next week in Tokyo but were postponed due to the earthquake and tsunami that have left the country in crisis. ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta sent a letter to Japanese organizers Tuesday asking if they would be capable of hosting the championships in several months, such as October. "If they don't respond by early Monday morning we're going to move forward," Cinquanta said on Friday. Last week's twin natural disasters in Japan left at least 10,000 people dead and have resulted in a nuclear crisis. "I'm still waiting for a response. We can't turn our backs on Japan in this moment," Cinquanta said from his Milan office. Alternatives that Cinquanta mentioned include holding the worlds at the end of April or the beginning of May, with the United States, Canada, Finland, Germany and Russia as possible hosts. The worlds were held in Turin last year, but Cinquanta ruled out returning to Italy. "I'm Italian and that wouldn't be right," he said. U.S. Figure Skating said it sent a letter to the ISU on Wednesday offering to host the championships in either the arena in Lake Placid, N.Y., or the Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. Both the Lake Placid and Colorado arenas are on the small side, but most larger arenas in the United States are unavailable due to NHL and NBA games. The American federation said it has not received a response from the ISU. "The Americans are very nice and helpful," Cinquanta said. "I have a lot of respect for the Americans." Also, Skate Canada has told the ISU it would help out in whatever way it can, without offering any specific sites. | |

| Six countries offer to host skating worlds
Source, Universal Sports ROME (AP) - Six countries have submitted bids to replace Japan as host of this year's figure skating world championships following the earthquake and tsunami that killed an estimated 18,000 people. International Skating Union president Ottavio Cinquanta told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the bids are from Russia (Moscow), Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia), the United States (Colorado Springs, Colorado or Lake Placid, New York), Finland (Turku), Croatia and Austria. The Croatia offer is likely Zagreb, while Cinquanta believes Graz is Austria's offer. Russia appears to be the leading candidate, with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin having spoken in favor of the bid Tuesday, saying "this is not a very expensive event and we are capable of taking care of all the expenses." The ISU council will vote Wednesday or Thursday on the site and determine the dates in late April or early May. There are 11 members of the council but Cinquanta will only vote in the case of a tie. "Russia is a big country for skating," Cinquanta said. "Russia's is a strong bid, just like the others." Russia held the worlds in 2005 at the Luzhniki sports complex in central Moscow. But the ITAR-Tass news agency cited Russian figure skating federation president Alexander Gorshkov as saying that the most likely venue for the championships would be the Megasport arena, which is newer but far from the center. The worlds were scheduled to begin Monday in Tokyo, but were postponed due to the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The offers were sent to the ISU's headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. | And the winner is... Moscow!
ISU Confirms Awarding of 2011 World Figure Skating Championships to Moscow (April 24 - May 1)
From the official notice posted this a.m. on ISU.org the International Skating Union has announced the awarding of MOSCOW to be the host for the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships.
(Excerpt from official ISU notice dated: 24 Mar 2011 11:48)
The ISU has reviewed all applications received and after careful evaluation the ISU Council decided to allot the Championships to the Figure Skating Federation of Russia, to be held in the Megasport Arena in Moscow/Russia, on April 24-May 1, 2011.
The organization of this major Event with little time to prepare will require a high level effort from the Figure Skating Federation of Russia which has assured the ISU of its full cooperation including in areas such as easy access to entry visas and security. The preparation for the updating of all relevant details (time schedule, Announcement, entry confirmations etc) have already begun and the ISU will revert as soon as possible with the necessary information.
Under these extraordinary circumstances the ISU asks for the full cooperation and understanding of the skating community and all involved entities in making this a successful Event. The full cooperation of all participating ISU Member federations hopefully attending in full strength will be of utmost importance.
Finally, the ISU is convinced that the Japanese delegation coming to Moscow deserves and will receive special attention and respect. At a time like this, words cannot express feelings but the ISU wants to let the skating friends of the Japan Skating Federation and the people of Japan know that the thoughts and wishes of the Skating family continue to remain with them.

| Subject: ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 - Preview Sat Apr 23, 2011 11:05 am | |
| ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 - Preview - Source, ISU.org The ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 will open in Moscow, Russia, on April 25. The ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011, originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan in March, were moved to Russia following the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11. The ISU World Figure Skating Championships were held in Russia three times before. Moscow hosted the event in 2005 and St. Petersburg hosted the very first World Championships in history in 1896 and then again in 1903. 195 skaters/couples from 44 ISU members have been entered for the Championships. A new entry quota system which comprises two types of entries (Direct entries and Preliminary Round entries) will be used. Skaters from countries with competitors that placed in the top 18 for Singles, top 12 in Pairs and top 15 in Ice Dance in the 2010 Championships are entered directly in the Short Program or Short Dance, i.e. the first segment of the competition. Member countries that are unable to fill their quota through Direct entries may enter the remainder of their competitors in the Preliminary Round. No Preliminary Round for Pairs will be held in Moscow. The Preliminary Round takes place before the official competition starts. The top 12 Men and 12 Ladies and the top 10 Ice Dance couples are then qualified to compete in the Short Program/Short Dance with the skaters entered through the Direct entries. In total 30 Men and Ladies (18 Direct entries and 12 Preliminary Round entries), and 25 Ice Dance couples (15 Direct entries and 10 Preliminary Round entries) compete in the first segment. Competitors placed in the top 24 in Single Skating/the top 16 Pair Skating couples and the top 20 Ice Dance couples in the Short Program/Short Dance qualify for Free Skating/Free Dance.
